9/12 Tuesday Morning

Join NPS Staff and NCSU Coastal Resilience & Sustainability at Cape Lookout Village. We will be accompanied by other partners along with local historians to learn more about Cape Lookout's Resiliency Planning for historic structures. 9:30am: Meet at Visitors Center for a program/brief overview of the historic structures project 10:15am: Ferry leaves Tour of Lighthouse Area, Historic Village, Cape Point and the Ever-Changing Landscape of Cape Lookout Drinks, water, bag lunch, and transportation will be provided to/from and on the island Return to Harkers Island no later than 3:00pm COST: $35/person to cover costs of ferry and trucks. Program is free, box lunches provided by NC Sea Grant Topics and Presenters Include: Environmental Changes Down East since Florence: Ryan Stancil & Baxter Miller – A Return to RISINGNC ON THE WATER: A panel of commercial and recreational fishermen along with Marine Biologists to discuss changes in what’s running along our shore and sounds ON THE LAND: A presentation from Dr. Emily Bernhardt on Ghost Forests of Coastal NC WHEN THE WATER MEETS THE LAND: A panel discussion from Sea Grant and NC State University on sunny day flooding, king tides, and other data. FLOODING AT HOME: Discussion of the importance of knowing your personal risks and vulnerability, Dr. Rob Young, The Center for Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University. Regional Response to the Changes: INFRASTRUCTURE – POWER LINES, ROADS, DRAINAGE DOWN EAST: Representatives from NC DOT, NC Sentinel Sites Military Liaison and local power companies will discuss resilience plans Down East. PERSONAL RISK MITIGATION OPTIONS – RESOURCES FOR HOUSE RAISING, INSURANCE: Learn more about flood insurance processes, FEMA resources and private property and casualty insurance options. COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: Community members speak while agency leaders listen to the challenges and needs of Down East.
