Waterfowl Weekend — Nov. 30 — Dec. 2, 2007

Sample Festival Schedule

On Friday evening, the museum will put on its Christmas attire with its preview party. The preview event will offer guests an opportunity to see a sampling the weekend.

The museum will open its doors at 8 a.m.Saturday for the free two-day event, featuring some of the area’s most talented artisans, cooks and musicians. Visitors will enjoy the education tent and community exhibits, down east cooking as well as kick up their heels to local musicians; decide what is fact and what is fiction as storytellers unwind their colorful tales and see some of the most talented decoy carvers from the Maryland to Georgia present their collectible wares. .

“It’s an event that not only educates but entertains,” said Pam Morris, education director of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. “We want people to learn about our heritage, but we want to make sure they have plenty of opportunity to experience the traditions while doing so.”

Schedule:

Friday Evening Preview

Saturday 8 am – Doors Open

5 pm – Auction

Sunday 8 am – Fellowship Service
10 am – Doors Open

Friday Night Preview

Each year the Friday Night Preview honors those people who have helped “build” this museum with their own talents, resources, time and leadership. Past recipients have included David Lawrence, Purcell & Helen Jones, James Davis, Billy & Janice Smith, John & Frances Civils, Roy & Ina Willis and Carl & Boo Huff and Guy & Jean Tucker, all of which have given over and over, in ways big and small, to keep the museum moving forward and providing the vision and leadership it has taken to make this place a reality.

Guy and Jean have earned their place among these great folks who have done so much toward preserving Down East’s rich heritage. Please help us say “thank you Guy & Jean” for all you’ve done over the years!

Reservations are now being taken for the Friday night event which will include a full seafood extravaganza and the fancy dessert reception. (Tickets are required for both events. Sponsorships are also available. Call the museum for details.)

SPECIAL GUESTS .... to be announced...

Saturday night’s Auction .... 5 pm Saturday evening – Donations being accepted now for high-end collectibles (decoys, guns, art, one-of-a-kind items); contact the museum for details on how you can help make this a successful fund-raiser and great fun for the bidders.

Waterfowl Weekend Fellowship Service .... 8 am Sunday morning -- Kerry Willis will return to lead our weekend fellowship service – a true Core Sound tradition now. This time together brings the whole weekend into perspective, gives us time to “think” about our sacred heritage and give thanks for all that Down East means. It is truly the best part of the weekend. If you haven’t attended before, make a special effort to join us. You’ll never miss it again ... (And stay for breakfast ... the best grits and tenderloin biscuits you can find anywhere!)

Waterfowl Weekend is about Good Cookin’ and Eatin’ too! Come hungry ... We’re taking on the food ourselves this year and offering some Core Sound favorites ... Stewed shrimp, scallop fritters, grilled Core Sound shrimp on a stick, homemade chili and HI lemon milk pies ... as well as our Waterfowl Weekend favorite ... Sweet Puppies!

Originally located within the Decoy Festival, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum’s annual celebration moved to its new facility in 1999 and expanded its offerings to include a broad spectrum of exhibits, demonstrations, events and activities reflecting the overall mission of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. Waterfowl carvers and artists, copper sculptors, model boat builders and photographers share their work with all who believe that the coastal traditions are important to preserving our state ’s cultural and natural heritage.

Boat building, net hanging, storytelling, book signings, traditional music and community exhibits bring craftsmen, local historians and musicians together to celebrate all that is “good” about these small communities of eastern

Carteret County. Hiking trails, duck blind building and Sunday morning community fellowship, along with VIP events on Thursday night, Friday noon and Friday night to offer something for everyone.

Harkers Island’s Outdoor Decorating Contest on Friday night marks the “official opening” of DECOY SEASON on the Island and brings together the Christmas season and all the events taking place that weekend all over the Island. Church dinners, bazaars, craft sales, youth groups, school projects and the entire community join in the celebration.
