Brother Gaskill is a prime example of the innate talent found Down East. In elementary school, Brother was a favorite among teachers for bulletin board illustrations and classroom art. He drew on everything, from scrap paper to the margins of his notebook. We all knew he could draw, he didn't have to tell us. Down East has a lot of folks like that ... unspoken abilities that we all take for granted.
Today that talent has been recognized by the whole world through his exemplary carvings and his flat art renderings. Still, even with all the ribbons and applause, Brother's humble way of sharing his talents with visitors, and especially students, keeps him true to his own beginnings and an inspiration for young folks in our community.
