BIRDING CLASSES
Jan 20: Winter Waterfowl (9 am – 1 pm)
Down East Carteret county is home to one of the major wintering waterfowl areas on the east coast of the United States. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum will offer a day in the field to observe these birds. After a short indoor presentation, we will explore areas around the Museum to identify ducks and geese, as well as other waterfowl, and discuss issues involving these birds.
Feb.10: Bird Photography (9 am – 1 pm)
Come discover techniques to improve your bird photography with award-winning photographer, Mark Buckler. Through a presentation and in-the-field instruction, we will explore the fascinating world of birds and learn how to capture compelling images. We will plan to visit a near-by waterfowl area to practice some techniques, so please dress accordingly and bring your camera. If time permits, we will also review some of the images that were taken during the field trip portion of the class.

Join Us to Honor
Cap’n Purcell Jones
Purcell Jones is a gentleman who deserves recognition for service to his community. He has touched so many people both in and out of Carteret County. Many of you know him as the owner operator of Camp Morehead (attention Camp Morehead Alumni. download event brochure (Adobe Acrobat PDF file, 263 kb) Some are also aware he is a very special friend of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center. Cap’n Purcell has spent thousands of hours doing everything from discovering sponsors to helping clean the kitchen. He is as much a part of our Museum as the walls and windows. He wants very much to see the Museum grow.
On November 8 we will hold a golf event in his honor and, at his request, to benefit the Museum. This is not just another golf tourney (see our brochure (download Adobe Acrobat PDF file, 263 kb)). See event schedule, below. Far from ordinary, the 18-hole Bob Moore designed championship golf course at the new North River Club will host our Captain’s Choice Tournament. Golfers will start their day with a light breakfast catered by Panera Bread, leave in their cart with goody bags on board, and be visited throughout the course by the traveling Coastal Beverage cart and Kinetico’s purified water. Larry Pittman’s Auto Market has a car waiting for the lucky golfer who hits the first hole in one.
If that is not enough enticement to join us, Floyd Olmstead, Floyd’s 1921 Restaurant, voted Best Chef 2007 by NC Coast Magazine readers will be cooking up his famous “Taste of the South” for lunch. Lunch will be made even more special when Cap’n Purcell receives well deserved recognition during the awards ceremony.
For a more sedate Saturday pace (see our brochure (download Adobe Acrobat PDF file, 263 kb)), Safrit’s Building Supply is helping us provide alternative entertainment to golf. Come enjoy a delicious Southern style brunch while you leisurely tour the fully decorated North River Club model homes. Everyone touring these beautiful homes will be entered to win more than $15,000 of fabulous Home & Garden Makeover Certificates. The net proceeds of this event will also benefit the Museum in honor of Cap’n Purcell Jones.
These events are especially important to the future of Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center as we enter the next phase of construction in the fall of 2008. The Museum has been a culmination of support from across the state and beyond in the shared commitment to preserving our waterfowl heritage. We invite you to help us finish the work Cap’n Purcell helped envision.

“I’ve been photographing the workboats of the region for more than 20 years, and I’ve also recorded the stories that fishermen and others tell about them,” said photographer Lawrence S. Earley whose black-and-white photographs will be featured at the event. “Some of these vessels are many decades old—some of them almost a hundred years old—and they have fascinating histories.” The exhibit and symposium will focus on some of the legendary boat builders of the region and their workboat designs.
The symposium and exhibit are sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council and the North Caroliniana Society. The two non-profit foundations work with communities to promote increased knowledge and appreciation of the state’s heritage.

“The
Island Boat”
“The
Island Boat” project was one of the
first in a series of several projects I hope
to complete within the next year. This project
is my way of contributing to help preserve
the heritage of Harkers Island.
These photographs help capture and retain
one of the oldest and most important means
of survival known to native Islanders. The
skill of building wooden boats is quickly
becoming a dying art, with only a few boat
builders left on the Island. Boat building,
commercial fishing and recreational fishing
have all been vital industries to the livelihood
of Islanders.

Jan Eason's
Portsmouth Homecoming
Coming to Core Sound Waterfowl
Museum & Heritage Center in October
Jan
Eason, a North Carolina native, sees photography
as a way of recording and documenting the natural
and social environment. He works primarily with
black and white film. Several years ago, while taking
photographic workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
he became interested in working with infrared film.
He is especially interested in photographing coastal
scenes using infrared film and this has become the
foundation for much of his recent work. MORE

Sailing Schooner Thomas
W. Lawson, 1902 - 1907
The Thomas W. Lawson was the world’s
largest and only seven-masted sailing schooner ever
built. She is a famous chapter in America’s
maritime history with a rare piece of her heritage
surfacing in eastern North Carolina.
The Lawson was designed by B.B. Crowninshield
for the Fore River Ship & Engine Building Co.,
of Quincy, Mass. in 1902. First built to haul coal,
she was refined to deliver oil between Texas ports
and Philadelphia. With a length of 395 ft and a
draft of 28 ft when fully loaded with oil, she only
stopped in deep water ports such as Newport News,
Va. The Lawson carried 25 sails measuring more than
43,000 square ft. Of the 25 sails, there were seven
gaff sails, seven gaff topsails, six stay sails
and five jibs. A crew of about 17, assisted by deck-mounted
steam “donkey” engines, expertly handled
these massive sails.
One of the able-bodied crewmen practiced
the traditional maritime past-time of model making.
This unnamed crewman made a beautiful shadowbox
model of his unique ship. MORE

Reliving the Dream --- Baseball
Down East, More Than a Game
May 21, 2005
“Baseball
was more than a game Down East; it was the spirit
of community, a culmination of extraordinary talent
across generations and a wonderful piece of Americana
that lived – and still lives -- right here on
the coast of North Carolina. The 40 years we are documenting
sent players to the Majors, developed coaches for
the
next generation and provided scholarships for successful
careers in teaching, business and across the board.
It is an interesting and important part of the heritage
of Carteret County, especially Down East, and we want
to make sure it is not forgotten.”
The
day’s activities included a history of Carteret
County baseball presented at 1 pm by Rodney Kemp, Joel
Hancock, Joe Willis and others, followed by a ballgame
at 3. Activities for children, a yard
sale / bake sale early that morning and food throughout
the day will made it a true family day Down East style!

Dole Applauds Inclusion of Core Sound Waterfowl Museum
Funding in Appropriations Bill
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole
applauded the inclusion of $400,000 for the Core Sound
Waterfowl Museum (CSWM) on Harkers Island in the Senate
Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development
and the Judiciary Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year
2006, which was approved by the full Appropriations
Committee last Friday. The bill will now be considered
by the entire Senate on a date to be determined
“The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum is dedicated
to preserving the culture and natural resources of this
pristine part of our state,” said Dole. “The
local efforts to support this museum are impressive,

project.”
CSWM will use the funding to complete the Museum Gallery
Wing of the facility.
November 18, 2005 – Senator Dole’s office
called to inform us that this appropriation gained final
approval. $400,000 will be forthcoming in early 2006
to cover the completion of construction on the Gallery

than two years of work went into this effort and we
would like to especially thank Ann Maxwell, Jimmy Broughton,
Larry Chernikoff, General Hugh Overholt, Jamie Norment
and ALL OF YOU who sent postcards, letters, emails and
faxes to Washington on our behalf. With this decision,
it is important that we remember the late Billy Smith,
founding chairman of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum,
whose influence and leadership still lives, and continue
the work he helped begin more than 15 years ago.

local choirs offering Down East Gospel music
from 1:30 until 3. At 3, we had a program
with special guests from across the state,
including Senator Scott Thomas & Representative
Jean Preston, to mark this important anniversary.
We invited local photographer Frances
Eubanks to come and share her new book and Carl
Huff’s gallery exhibition “Winter’s
Work” offered a fine example of the
talent this museum represents.
Special plans for
the day also included dedicating our porch
planks although special guest,
Rodney Kemp, could not be with us. The
Core Sound Waterfowl Museum delegation to the Smithsonian
Folklife Festival were introduced and the Museum
Board pleased to recieve a $10,000
Capital Campaign contribution from
RBC Centura bank. THANK
YOU! |

Portsmouth
Village was chartered in 1753 and it was the largest
village on the Outer Banks in the mid 1800s. It is located
just south of Ocracoke Island, across Ocracoke Inlet.
The last residents left Portsmouth in 1971. The abandoned
village is now a part of Cape Lookout National Seashore;
the Park and the Friends of Portsmouth Island maintain
the historic district. On alternate years, former residents,
other family members, National Park Service personnel,
visitors and friends join to celebrate the village and
its place in North Carolina Outer Banks history.
