Join the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum is more than a collection of artifacts; it is the story of hunters, fishermen, guides, carvers, boat builders, net hangers, quilters, storekeepers, men and women, young and old, who have lived along Core Sound for centuries. It is a bridge between skilled watermen and craftsmen to future generations who will learn to appreciate the rich heritage of this land and her people.

For the past several years, thousands of volunteer hours have been invested in the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. It is the first such project for Down East and deserves the support of all who appreciate the beauty of this place and the rich history of its people. We welcome you to our growing list of contributors and challenge you to become part of preserving and continuing this heritage for future generations.

As a member of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum you will be an important part of preserving these things. You will help build a bridge from centuries of skilled watermen to future generations who will know, understand, and appreciate this heritage.

The Annual Giving that our membership represents is very important. We depend on YOU for our base budget to provide for operations, programming, promotion and maintenance. There is much that needs to be done here ... landscaping, much needed equipment (phones, kitchen appliances, computer printers) to name a few .... We have made the move to the new facility with the same staff who continue (with the help of volunteers) to do more and more. Even with their strong commitment, we are in serious need of additional staff who can help meet the growing needs for building maintenance, as well as more office and gift shop help.

WE, the members, must meet this challenge as we continue our fund-raising efforts to complete construction. WE have much to do and we depend on MEMBERS like you to help us do it! If your membership needs renewing, NOW is the time. Then, ask someone to come and visit, check our website, JOIN ... Ask several! You will be amazed at how easy it is for people to see that this is important work and their help will make a difference. Many of us are doing all WE can ... Now it is time that we invited others to help meet the growing needs.

An increase in membership strengthens our grant-writing while increased dollars helps meet all the needs of the new building and our growing operation. Last year, our visitation reached 20,000! Our daily summer average was over 100 per day. That's more than double what we had been doing at the old museum. Our gift shop sales totaled almost $200,000! Thank you ..... And that was our first year in our new home .... Just think what we CAN do with your help.

Remember, membership makes an excellent gift!

Here's WHY we need YOUR membership ...

  • To provide administrative resources for the museum operation at the temporary facility and the new museum including educational programming, documentary projects, the new building's capital campaign and events throughout the year;
  • To support programming on-site and across the state, offering programs to local rest home facilities, day-care programs, parks and recreation summer camps, school classes, teacher workshops, environmental education efforts and tour groups;
  • To partner with other organizations and museums, offering demonstrations, classes, programs, exhibits and resources representative of our coastal communities;
  • To promote, encourage and recognize the value of local traditional craftsman and artists through the museum's gallery, programming, media contacts and statewide efforts dedicated to NC's cultural resources;
  • To help support sustainable and positive economic development through the "cottage industries" of decoy carving, model boat building, crafts and local gift shops;
  • To offer to the public the work of local writers and researchers information and publications on local history, photography, environmental education and oral history;
  • To share with visitors, students and newcomers the heritage trades that have sustained the Down East communities for generations including hunting and carving, boat building, crabpot making, nethanging, and commercial fishing traditions;
  • To encourage local community preservation through the collection of oral history, conservation of artifacts and establishing a "safe place" for archival materials for Down East Carteret County;
  • To bring to the community financial resources (donations, grants, cooperative projects) to support our efforts in preserving the "sense of place" so important to the Down East people (past and future);
  • To serve the county as a "voice" for Down East in current county planning and development, tourism promotion and economic opportunities;

AND IN ALL WE DO, to keep our heritage alive and working for generations to come!

We need a growing membership! That includes YOU!

YOUR membership confirms YOUR support and GIVES us the resources we need to continue the work WE are doing with the Down East communities.
