Dear Editor:

WE have lost a friend.

James Davis was a friend to many, but to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum James Davis was not only a friend, but a worker, a giver, a leader and most of all a believer. He knew what this museum was about from the beginning because he had LIVED it.

James Davis gave generously, not only of his resources but more importantly of his spirit and from his heart. His greatest contributions were seldom seen, never in need of applause or credit, but always there when needed the most. James was the one that could always see beyond the hurdles of the moment and the challenges of the day to see what was to come. He believed in word and deed that what WE are building Down East is going to be something great for all of Carteret County and eastern North Carolina. He helped make that dream come true and we are so glad that he lived to see us "home" but sad to think of all the good days ahead without him.

James loved Core Sound. Early mornings often found him heading to Tusk to check on the farm , to make a quick run to the camp, to tend to the home place. He lived and worked in town, but his heart was on the shores of Core Banks. That salty air was a part of him and he was part of it. He never forgot the life his father shared with him as a boy and the appreciation for home and family, the out-of-doors, the natural beauty around him that he grew to accept as a man. For his children, that legacy lives on.

James will be missed by many, but for the museum family it will run deep with a kinship that spans the years we have shared this vision. We will miss his smile, his stories, his love for Core Banks and her people ... there will be no one to take his place. We are thankful for all that he gave and now, for him --- and all the others who have passed our way and whose story we continue to tell --- we will do our best to keep moving forward with the same spirit and commitment that James gave so freely.

For James and all those who have been part of this effort, for his children and ours, for our past and our future, James' investment in the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum will continue to grow and strengthen for years to come. Thank you James for all you gave.

Karen Willis Amspacher - Director
