BIRDING CLASSES

These classes are very limited (15 per class) so CALL TODAY. 252.728.1500 -- All are free except the last class on June 2 that requires a $15 ferry fee.

All begin at the museum - REGISTRATION REQUIRED

April 21 – Neo-Tropical Migratory Birds ( 8 am – 12 noon)

Coastal North Carolina is a major breeding spot for neo-tropical migratory birds. These birds winter in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and make their summer home in this area. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum will offer a field trip where we will identify these birds by sight and sound, as well as learn about the biology, habitat requirements and life cycles of these well traveled birds.

June 2 – Colonial Nesting Birds (9 am – 1 pm)

Many of our coastal birds nest in a unique fashion. They will gather in large groups, and utilize uninhabited islands in our local sounds. These birds, such as pelicans, terns, egrets, herons and gulls are called colonial nesting species. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum will offer a class to learn more about these species. After a short indoor presentation, we will boat to some of the islands to view them from the water. Due to their nesting behavior, we will not be able to access the islands.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY/COMPUTER CLASSES

Community College classes are gearing up. Check their website for the schedule. Currently open classes include Word 2003 Essentials (starts 2/17) and Introduction to Microsoft Office 2003 (starts 3/3) Contact CCC for details and registration.

Community Quilt Project

The museum has decided to put together a community quilt in celebration of the Opening of the Museum Gallery planned for the spring/summer of 2009 ..  This project will be something like the MHC Sesquicentennial Quilt the folks in MHC made last year.

This quilt will be made up of 6x6 inch squares that are crafted by individuals from the various down east communities and then all sewn together to create one large quilt. The quilt is currently designed for 150 squares. We are hoping for a very large response to this project and if we do maybe we will end up with several community quilts. These quilts will ultimately be displayed in the exhibit gallery at the museum.

This is a wonderful way to honor your family, church, school, community, a special friend, your children, a landmark (such as an old store or favorite place), anything that helps tell the story of the people and places that represents Down East heritage.  This includes natives, newcomers, folks from here who live away, folks from away who live here now ... EVERYONE!

If you have any questions please contact Sharon Bailey at the museum (728-1500).

The Willow Pond project moves forward thanks to the support of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Ducks Unlimited, NC Wildlife Habitat Foundation, Cape Lookout National Seashore and others ...

Tourism Cares for Tomorrow helped fund the development of a trail guide and interpretive signage that will be installed over the next several months.

Keep checking for website updates ....
