Horse Watching on Shackleford Banks

Join a park ranger for a glimpse into the world of the wild horses of Shackleford Banks.

Call for more complete driving directions, a park site bulletin with a map, and answers to your questions.

RESERVATION REQUIRED with Cape Lookout National Seashore. The park will make your ferry reservation for you. Ferry fees will be collected immediately before departure by the ferry service and are priced per round trip. A limited number of spaces are available. Please be on time.

PRIVATE BOAT TRANSPORTATION. If you have your own boat, there is no charge for the program. Be sure to note the Shackleford Banks meeting time & location for your trip. You must have a reservation with Cape Lookout National Seashore to participate.

WAITING LISTS are kept - and used. If you have a reservation and can not participate, please call as early as possible so someone else can have your spot.

June 23, Friday, Island Ferry Adventures; $14 adult, $6 under 12
Meet by 8:30 a.m. on Front St., Beaufort, diagonally across from BB&T Bank & Inlet Inn, leave between 8:45 and 9:00 am; catch ferry to return at 2:15 p.m. and finish by 2:45 p.m.
The walking trip begins at 9:15 a.m. on Shackleford at the west end dock and concludes by 2:45 p.m.

July 19, Weds., Waterfront Ferry Service; $15/ adult, $10/ 12 & under
Meet by 8:45 a.m. in Morehead City, just west of the NC State Port entrance, leave at 9:00 am; catch ferry to return at 2:00 p.m., and finish by 2:30 p.m.
The walking trip begins at 9:15 a.m. on Shackleford at the west end dock and concludes at 2:00 p.m.

September 24, Sunday, Outer Banks Ferry; $14/adult, $6/ kids under 12
Meet by 8:15 a.m. in downtown Beaufort across from the Maritime Museum, leave at 8:30 a.m.; catch ferry to return at 2:30 p.m. and finish by 2:45 p.m.
The walking trip begins at 8:45 a.m. on Shackleford at the west end dock and concludes there at 2:30 p.m.

October 14, Saturday, Local Yokel Ferry; $10/ person;
Meet by 8:30 a.m., 1st ferry on the right on Harkers Island, leave at 8:45; catch ferry to return at 2:30 and finish by 2:45 p.m.
The walking trip begins at 9:00 on Shackleford at Whale Creek Bay and concludes at 2:30 p.m.

WALKING SHOES. Be prepared to walk through sand & wet marshes and climb dune hills. The horses roam far and wide so we'll be walking to find them.

WEATHER. No rain dates are scheduled; we plan to go unless the weather is too bad to boat out. You may call Cape Lookout National Seashore before 4:30 the day before your trip if the weather is chancy. In summer, be prepared for very high heat indexes – dress in loose fitting clothes and bring extra water.

STAYING PAST THE PROGRAM END or leaving early is possible; arrange your pickup time with your ferry operator.

REMEMBER TO BRING:

__ lunch & snacks __ rain jacket (also for spray from the boat)
__ water; drinks in a re-close-able bottle __ binoculars
__ hat __ camera, telephoto lens desirable, film
__ sunscreen __ sturdy walking shoes that can get wet
__ bug repellent (in the boat or on the marsh)
