Being a native of Harkers Island, now I'm living in Wilmington
NC. Have met some of the most wonderful people here even thought there
are not from tne island.........you bet they have heard of Harkers
Island and the CSWM. They always seem to pick up on my accent for
some reason and know right where I'm from ??????? Wonder why? Could
it be that local flair in my voice that gives me away? I think so
and that makes me be proud to be from Harkers Island and a member
of the CSWM. I have told several people here in the Wilmington of
CSWM and told them to checkout the website to see what were all about.
I'm involved in a lot of community activiteis here in Wilmingotn area
but nothing compares to the "DownEast" and Harkers Island
aera. What a journey we have been down to preserve our hertiage and
our way of life. Just becasue I don't livee on Harkers Island anymore
doesn't mean I don't like to come home smell the salt air as I cross
the draw bridge. Like the saying goes, " Ain't nothing prettier
than seeing that draw bridge, on the way home from vacation."
Just thought to drop a couple lines here as I tell some friends about
the CSWM. You can take the boy off the island, but you can't take
the isalnd out the boy"

We visited Harkers Island in 1997. Bought 2 decoys from
Kurt Salter and 1 dcoy from Norman Hancock. Would love to come again.
A beautiful place and the people are so friendly. Ny relatives made
decoys in the early 1900's. they were from the Carolinas. Merry
Christmas to you all.

I have taken your
tour a few times in the last few days. This is by far the very
best web site that I have seen. The effort that was put into it
is obvious. Please keep going. Thank you so much for such a wonderful
look into the past history of an area that I have always wondered
about.

What a wonderful island, and a special museum! We just
returned & were so impressed with the people, the exhibits,
the " feel" of the museum itself. Already planning our
return visit! Thank you.

I enjoyed the visit. My family is from Marshallburg and
Ocracoke. I am a daughter of Thomas Nelson of Marshallburg and Eleanor
Nell Howard of Ocracoke. My childhood was spent between these two
places and traveling all through all the small villages of Down
East. I enjoyed the site very much and it brought back many memories.
Both of my parents are buried at Marshallburg.

I miss my Daddy a lot.I think how excited he would be if he could
see the progress that has been made here since he passed.I try to
visit as often as possible. I know like many others that maybe I should
spend a little more time watching our museum being apart of her.
I sometimes forget and exspect to see Daddy standing here showing
how to carve or explaing how something works with a crowd around him
and a few more waiting to get to him.
I know he couldn't be but still my heart believes and still it feels
him. I was wondering what is real? Is it someting you can touch or
feel? Or is it the way something makes you feel?
Either way these feelings are created when visiting the museum.

My daughter Meredith said she was thinking of her grandfather
while we were building the skiff. My mind was on all the boat builders
that I have become aquainted with over the 52 years I've lived here.
When I smell juniper I remember walking in a boat house how it smelled.
Now you smell epoxy or fiberglass. We were under a little pressure
to finish the skiff by the end of the festival, but we did it. Many
of the old timers had to build a boat, and then work them to put
bread on the table. A strange thing happen building this skiff.
There were Guthries (Clifford & myself), a Willis (Hugh Jr.) and
a Rose (Jeff Jr.) that built her. I would like to thank the Museum
Staff for giving me this opportunity. My son told me it was the
best festival he had ever had. A special thanks to Jimmy Amspacher
for his help and I can't forget James Allen Rose, who gave us pointers,
and a pat on the back which is always heplful. What an experience
it was. My crew wants to build something different next year.

As usual the Museum looked fabulous for this years show. I
was very excited about Waterfowl Weekend this year because my father
Heber and brother Clifford were going to build the skiff for this
year. It was fun going out of the building every hour and looking
at them to enjoying there selves and caring on a tradition that
has been in the Guthrie family for year and years. All I could think
about was my Grandfather Chauncey Guthrie the whole weekend.

Hello and greetings from PA. I discovered the Core Sound Waterfowl
Museum on a recent trip to Harkers Island. It was a wonderful discovery
and I enjoyed the exhibits and the gift shop. I'll be sure to stop
again on my next trip and am anxious to climb to the top of your

I have enjoyed reading about the history of the Core Sound and Outer
Banks area, and have enjoyed having been there on numerous visits
over the years. This area is truly a part of our ancestry and the
history will follow all of us for years to come. One of the most
beautiful natural areas left in the free world!!!

I am Joan Greene's daughter. I have not gotten any of the email
Karen A. was going to send to me at work, so I guess they have some
kind of security block on the incoming emails for the company (I
am not sure why it has not come throught). My home email address
is ntkaren@aol.com. Please have Karen send me the information she
was going to send to me at my work address (about upcoming events).
I will just make a point of checking my home email to try and keep
up to date with what is going on. Thanks.

Drum Inlet, Harkers Island, Core Banks and many more places were
a "Lost World" from my fathers trips fishing on the coast.
Finally my on visits revealed a wonderful low country and people
standing fast in there own time. Can we preserve it forever just
